This is an enormous change to Mac OS, and I would strongly advise anybody using a Mac now to consider starting with a fresh drive, rather than trying to do an update over OSX 10.4.x. I'm already bracing myself for a similar thing with OSX 10.5, due out in October.

In a couple of cases, the software accused me of trying to steal the program, but I was able to get new serial numbers from the manufacturers through emails, and I worked it out in a couple of days. In some cases, where the software kept records of how and where they were installed, I had to re-enter serial numbers and so on, but so far, everything's worked fine. I then installed my old G5's internal drive in the second ATA slot, rebooted, and copied over the applications from the old drive to the new one. I started with a fresh drive, installed the included disc of OSX 10.4.8, then shut it down. This was killing me with my old G5, and was one reason I replaced it with an Intel Xeon Mac. Quite a few computer experts (including Leo Laporte, syndicated radio show host) advise that it's a good idea every couple of years to replace your main boot drive and reinstall your applications, just because of "bit rot." Leo's theory is that all drives - Mac and Windows alike - inevitably get clogged up with clumps of old software, fragments of bad files, etc., which tend to slow down system performance. Installing Vista over XP can lead to similar problems. I've also had to do this with Windows, and that goes 'way back to version 3.1.

You need to do a "scorched earth" and start with a brand-new fresh install of the OS on a new drive.

(Another good place for emergency Mac advice is the LA Final Cut Pro User group - My experience is that it's never a good idea to try to do a drastic upgrade on an operating system (say, more than two or three years). Rob, if you ever have this kind of problem again, ask first on the board before doing anything. If it all goes to plan this should provide a redundant backup that requires ZERO attention, no backup software routines, no scheduling and of course no Wizards. When 10.5 comes out, Time Machine is going to solve a lot of these issues - with a drive externally on the Firewire bus, you will always have a concurrent back up of everything you do. Now, why not use an external drive for your backups as this also gives you another level of backup security since the drive is not always mounted and is on a different bus. As far as I know, each model only supports a certain number of drives internally (including optical drives along with the hard drives) so in the past unless I knew that the model of Mac I had would support 2 or 3 internal drives I always added drives EXTERNALLY on the Firewire bus. Depending on the bus architecture of the particular computer you are using, it is possible that all these cables and jumpers may not have been set properly. I am too computer illiterate to even know what you mean by "single master" and "slave". What else could cause a drive to be un recognized? I assume any ATA compliant hard drive should mount as long as the jumper is set correctly and the IDE (and power) cables are connected correctly. I would like to have a second drive to store FPC data files. I still don't understand why a good HD was not recognized either as a single master or as a slave. I am out of ideas and if anyone has a suggestion. When I installed it by itself I changed jumper to master HD. I did change the jumper to slave when it was installed with the original (master) HD.

I don't understand how my original drive can function if it is too damaged to install new software, nor why it wont recognize a perfectly good functioning "new used ATA" HD that has been checked. but there is nothing in the box to click on (the HD has not been recognized). Same result I get to the point where I am asked to select the destination drive. On advice from a PC repair guy I removed my original HD and installed the other used HD and ran the install again. I have tried adding a second (used) hard drive but it is not recognized when I run the installer. I have used less than 10 GB space so I have loads of free space available. I did and it again says my 60 GB hard drive is damaged (unrepairable errors).

I want to upgrade FCP and Nuendo and Safari all of which require at least 10.3.Īpple store "genius" suggested using a "First Aid" utility on the 10.4 install disk. I am leery of doing a full install which erases everything and reformats the HD because of the possibility of losing the limited capabilities I have.

(Works fine otherwise with the limited pdf downloads and TextEdit notes to myself). It loads but after going through install it says my hard drive is damaged. 10.3 Panther and then after I got new superdrive I found a retail copy of 10.4 Tiger.
